Synopsis: “Hatching,” a genuinely unpleasant Finnish horror fantasy, occasionally feels like a short film that was bloated into a feature. It wasn’t, but this high-concept adult fairy tale about a 12-year-old gymnast who discovers and nurtures an enormous bird monster only comes to life in spurts and turns, according to the excellent work of its actors and crew. Thanks to everyone who contributed to making the aforementioned avian monster appear slimy and feral. Tinja, a bashful pre-teen, appears to be most appealing because she is not her suffocating mother Äiti. Perhaps Tinja is simply unsure of how to deal with her mother’s numerous demands. Tinja’s activities are continually documented by Äiti for her influencer-style blog, which is all about her “typical Finnish family.” This explains their family’s flowered wallpaper, pastels and polo shirts, and glass and porcelain decor. That explains why the violent bird-related finale of an early scene isn’t very shocking: Tinja’s mother snaps a blackbird’s neck when it flies into Äiti’s home and damages several things as it tries to flee. A fantastic start for a horror film, but not surprising given Tinja’s mother’s obvious monstrosity.
