Synopsis: Monk is losing interest in his job, with the professor facing increasingly sensitive students while trying to teach them about the ways of literature from the American South. He’s a black man unable to deal with black issues in his class, putting him in trouble with the college. The book festival trip only adds to his depression, watching as Sinatra speaks to a large, fawning audience about her book, which reinforces negative stereotypes for the reading enjoyment of predominately white audiences. “American Fiction” initially seems like the stuff of a rowdier Spike Lee film, but Jefferson doesn’t head in a more pointed direction of mockery, following Monk as he returns to the family he’s worked hard to ignore. Passing the work to his agent, Arthur, Monk is horrified to learn that publishers want it, creating a financial windfall for a man who needs the money, but isn’t completely ready to torch his credibility, creating the pseudonym “Stagg R. Leigh” to hide his identity.
