Synopsis: “As They Made Us 2022” So we’re really rooting for his feature writing-directing debut “As They Made Us.” But despite a stellar cast and Bialik showing a natural gift for pacing as a director. It’s a depressingly downbeat story with Dustin Hoffman and Candice Bergen. Which are completely unsuitable and irreversible. Every time they’re onscreen. So it’s almost uncomfortable. Dianna Agron gives a sweet and natural performance as the repressed Abigail. A newly divorced mother of two young children, who has spent her entire life at the behest and call of her parents. Barbara, is a domineering, pushy guy who doesn’t seem to have it. A kind of bone in his body, and Eugene, who has a degenerative condition. And he’s not going to get better. When they give bad news, they take a jibe at doctors. And either harass or fires caregivers who are simply doing their jobs. We can see that there is true love between Barbara and Eugene. And Hoffman and Bergen are amazing together. But whatever sympathy we can have for these characters. It then washes off. When we see how terrible Barbara treats people in the present day. And how awful it was that Abigail and her brother Nathan grew up in a household where Eugene was verbally and physically abusive.
