Synopsis: “Bullet Train” is enjoyable. Its straightforward goal is to feature endearing individuals doing enjoyable action, amusing dialogue, and incredibly gory battle scenes, all while maintaining a level of flamboyant flair reminiscent of Tony Scott just before he fully committed to the use of bizarre filters and unexpected inserts. The ideal formula for establishing immediately recognizable characters and underlying tension is a story about a group of badasses who all fall upon one spot with seemingly competing goals. Although “Bullet Train’s” plot appears complex due to the number of characters and conflicting plot lines, it isn’t. The “mysteries” that appear along the route are also all easily solved. Although there are a few unexpected cameos and the disclosure of at least one actor in a key part is a delightful moment, it is easy to predict how A will get to B in terms of the plot. But the focus here is primarily on the fun stunt work and the chemistry between the dynamic actors. Despite some fumbling on emotional stakes and shoddy comedic pieces, the cast has amazing timing and chemistry together, and they carry many scenes.
