Synopsis: “Crimes of the Future,” his most recent release, is rough and terrifying, but somehow calm; it’s a low-key dispatch from the end of the world. It’s set in an unspecified future and follows a duo of artists — Viggo Mortensen as Saul and Léa Seydoux as Caprice — who stage surgeries as shows. With Saul lying supine in a biomorphic contraption with onlookers on the sidelines, Caprice tenderly examines Saul’s viscera with a rainbow controller, removing enigmatic new organs that have formed inside his body. The audience is quiet, attentive, and respectful, and Saul appears to be overjoyed. “Crimes of the Future” is reminiscent of some of Cronenberg’s past works, particularly “Videodrome,” a shocker about a man who loses his mind, in terms of themes, physicality, and violent convulsions. This new film has a darker tone than many of the other ones, though it’s possible that I’ve changed. People are developing and devolving once more, transforming into something familiar yet alien and dangerous. “Crimes of the Future” feels like a requiem, despite the morbid laughter and the beatific smile that can light up Saul’s face like St. Teresa of vila’s. Cronenberg has always been a human condition diagnostician; in this film, he also feels like a mortician.
