Synopsis: “Lightyear” Andy, the ‘original’ man in the film, was so loved. For his light year toys. This incarnation of Buzz – is voiced by Chris Evans instead of Tim Allen. Still echoing about his Space Ranger duties. But he lacks some of the bubbly sweet ironies of the toy. Because here, of course, he is taken seriously for the most part. That said, he has just trapped his entire crew on a distant planet. And in a set-up that takes a lot of time. We see him trying to test-drive a replacement fuel deflector. Which he hopes will help bring them back. The snag is that every time he takes a test run. Although it seems so. That takes minutes on the planet. Years pass. Because it moves with time. Every time he comes back. So his friends grow up. Only her pet robot cat with Socks—like so many sidekicks in front of her—stays—the best thing in the movie. Essentially, that’s what we’re getting at here. That’s the origin story of Buzz. Which is all well and good but relevant. The film kicks into gear properly in its second part. In which he returns to find his old partner Alisha dead in old age and the robots besieging the humans for unknown reasons. Can he team up with an unlikely trio of cadets—Alisha’s plucky granddaughter Izzy Keke Palmer—ankle-marked former thief Darby and hapless pen-loving Moe—to find out what’s going on. Sox captures every scene. In which he is whether it is ‘furball’ with a blowtorch or hitting people with knock-out darts. And the buzz is felt by Evans.
