Synopsis: “Memory,” the latest action movie from “Martin Campbell” director Martin Campbell, has an intriguing premise: Liam Neeson plays Alex Lewis, an aged assassin suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Alex becomes increasingly unpredictable to the F.B.I. squad trailing him, led by contemplative agent Vincent Serra, as he pursues retribution against a child trafficking network in El Paso. Aside from the unique idea, “Memory” is a ludicrous slog. Its plot clichés and lackluster performances last far longer than the story itself. This is a remake of the critically acclaimed Belgian film “The Memory of a Killer,” which was released in 2005. As a result, “Memory” is another terrible American remake. It’s as if all of the worst episodes of “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” were blended together and then extended to nearly two hours. Dario Scardapane’s script is threadbare in some places and unnecessary in others. Its portrayal of female characters is gloomy at best. There are several pauses for eye-roll-inducing genre material, such as a violent police interrogation or a scene of Agent Serra staring out a window and drinking Scotch. The British and Australian actors play practically all of the American characters, a decision that would be less noticeable were a film not set in Texas. Neeson is fine, and he gets to do all of his usual action movie stuff, such as growling threats and sleeping with a much younger woman. But he’s also strangely underused; the film quickly shifts its focus to Agent Serra, leaving Alex and his impairment in the background. Whatever attraction this film had in its previous incarnation has been lost, leaving a trail that is either mind-numbing or humorous by mistake when it isn’t absolutely aggravating.
