Synopsis: “Poor Things” welcomes viewers into the weird science of Dr. Godwin’s world, where the man of medicine has spent recent years fusing together different animals, eventually working to his creation of Bella. With the mind of an infant, Bella requires time to grow, putting Max in the position of caretaker while Dr. Godwin tends to his surgical duties and tops off his meals by blowing giant bubbles from the depths of his throat. “Poor Things” positions Max as the audience surrogate, tasked with maintaining order to madness, and he slowly falls for Bella’s innocence, studying a woman with the mind of a child, with Dr. Godwin’s mansion something of a day care for the character as she seeks to find a life beyond the estate’s grounds.
