Rating: 6.9/10
Synopsis: A grin begins with a spooky idea, and for almost half of its finally pointless nearly two-hour running duration, it keeps things spooky enough. The creature is aesthetically defined by the ultimate horror: a failure to smize, but what director/screenwriter Parker Finn finally delivers is a bloated, cliché-riddled regurgitation of worn-out horror cliches. It starts off with promise; at first, Smile appears like it’s going to use the genre to explore generational trauma and the scary way that something utterly out of your control—your genetics—can define your existence in a way that can seem almost fated. Our protagonist is Rose Cotter, a therapist who witnessed directly as a youngster the fatal toll mental illness—in this case, addiction and depression—can have on a person’s life. However, after bringing up these concepts, Smile restricts his discussion to the exploitation of the land. Eventually, there is a Big Monster Reveal scene where we see the true evil entity that is behind the rictus grins that have been torturing Rose. It is both the realization of Freud’s worst sexist fantasy and a shocking letdown. On the LookMovies ag website, one-click streaming is accessible from any device.
