Synopsis: “The Long Game” explores trauma through the character of JB, who struggles under the heavy weight of wartime memories he is unable to process. Haunted by his WWII experiences, JB finds solace in golf, developing a passion for the game and longing for community acceptance. However, the story establishes his outsider status early when JB is denied entry to the Del Rio Golf Club despite Frank’s endorsement, leaving JB angry and questioning his place in society. While this exclusion subplot is potent, golf remains central, as teens form their own team and practice space. More formula appears as coach Frank molds the ragtag group into contenders through training montages and tournaments highlighting their teamwork and talent growth. Racism emerges too when danger meets the San Felipe squad at a late-night diner. Overstuffed with speeches and past-present discussions, “The Long Game” falters in tight construction, with Joe’s love interest and repetitive pacing dragging down the overwrought narrative.
