Synopsis: Watching Where the Crawdads Sing in a theatre in 2022 is strange. This kind of movie has “adapted from the best-selling novel” written all over it from the very first frame, but not necessarily in a bad manner. The Prince of Tides, Fried Green Tomatoes, and White Oleander are just a few examples of the euphoric, idealized, and “prestigious”-feeling films that come to mind. It has the feel of a movie you might watch on cable on a down day, back when you had cable, or borrow from the library to watch with the book. The novel’s most famous or memorable passages of writing are presumed to be represented by the flowery and hazy voiceovers that begin and finish the book. Fortunately, regardless of whether I have read the source work or not, this subgenre is essentially catnip for me. Knowing a movie is based on a well-known book, which is certainly the reason it was adapted for the screen, gives one the assurance that the plot has been well reviewed and found worthy by the general public. Even if it turns out to be trashy or unsatisfying, it gives the impression of participating in culture and, if the adaptation is poor, perhaps a sense of camaraderie with other readers. If it successfully captures the pleasures of the original novel, you now have a new book to check out in order to enjoy the story more fully. I mainly wondered how the book is organized by contrast throughout this movie. Beginning in the late 1960s, a body is found and a murder inquiry is launched in the North Carolina community of Barkley Cove. A thin line of evidence points to Kya Clark, the local outcast known as the “marsh girl.” The rest of the movie alternates between flashbacks detailing Kya’s life and her current murder trial as she starts relating her narrative to a nice defense attorney after being arrested. In some respects, this results in a sense of anticipation, but in others, it oddly feels anticlimactic.
