Synopsis: The fact that something sinister is happening within the convent is not concealed in “Immaculate.” The screenplay immediately portrays distress in its opening scene, as a young nun attempts to escape from the building discreetly, only to be apprehended by her captors and subjected to a deeply unpleasant punishment for her defiance. Cecilia, who is unaware of the impending danger, arrives from Detroit and is warmly welcomed by Father Sal, who desires her to feel at ease and prepared for her commitment to God. “Immaculate” follows Cecilia as she familiarizes herself with her surroundings, learns about nun healthcare, and discovers her role within the convent. She also shares her story of faith, having miraculously survived a childhood accident where she was pronounced dead for seven minutes after falling into a frozen lake. The strength of her faith was solidified through this traumatic experience. However, “Immaculate” lacks energy and fails to provoke viewers with its exploration of religious submission and perversion. Sydney Sweeney, the lead actress, offers little assistance as she struggles to convey the necessary level of panic required for her character.
