Synopsis: In 33 A.D., Clarence is a man living his way in Jerusalem, making a small living selling weed to the community, joined by his friend, Elijah. Clarence owes a fortune to local gangster Jedediah, and he’s in love with the man’s sister, Varinia, putting him in a difficult position of debt and longing. Understanding the ways of Jesus from his twin brother, Thomas, Clarence begins to see a way out of his problems, electing to pose as a messiah using his natural showmanship and help from enforcer Barabbas, a freed slave. Crossing the land selling the miracle of God to the needy, Clarence begins to collect the money he needs to secure a brighter future. However, Rome is watching, with Pontius Pilate ordered to rid Jerusalem of prophets, putting Clarence in a dangerous position. “The Book of Clarence” is a big swing for Samuel, who’s trying to ride a thin line between parody and sincerity, arranging a directorial obstacle course for himself as the picture plays with laughs and intense introspection.
