Synopsis: “The Color Purple” covers just under 40 years in the lives of its characters, and it begins with Celie and Netti as teenagers, battling the evil that men do on the Georgia coast. Director Blitz Bazawule captures this primary relationship, which handles the joys of human connection but also the horrors of this reality, with Alphonso impregnating Celie for the second time, subjecting her to an experience where she’s not allowed to keep the children. It’s an everyday nightmare for Celie, who relies on Netti for comfort, strengthening their union, which is challenged by additional forms of torture, including the presence of Mister, a farmer used to taking what he wants. Again, “The Color Purple” is incredibly grim, and Bazawule is tasked with breaking up the terror with musical numbers, with songs used to explore the emotional spaces of the main players.
