Synopsis: Bayona doesn’t treat the plane crash with mounting dread. He sets a more personal atmosphere with “Society of the Snow,” introducing team dynamics and friendships, with the trip a source of excitement for the young men, who love rugby but also welcome a chance to meet Chilean women during the excursion. The air disaster occurs in the opening 15 minutes of the 130-minute-long film, and Bayona brings real horror to the sequence, watching as revelry turns to anxiety, while the airplane is ripped apart in the mountains, smashing the passengers together, leaving many with wounds that take their lives in the first night of the event. “Society of the Snow” doesn’t downplay the visceral experience of the crash, but the production is determined to remind viewers of true loss, sharing the names of the dead as the story unfolds.
